Go Off The Beaten Path On a Walking Holiday

A walking holiday is one of the most potentially diverse, versatile and fascinating types of getaway. There is something about venturing outside the typical tourists spots or planned excursions to ramble around lesser-known areas that is inherently attractive to a certain portion of holidaymakers.

However, some walking holiday destinations are more interesting than others, and most avid ramblers prefer to discover somewhere few people have been before, rather than stick to the old tourist mainstays like everyone else. If this sounds like you, read on to learn about a couple of off-the-beaten-path destinations you can gun for on your next walking holiday.

Gibraltar

Only seven miles across and dominated by the eponymous rock, Gibraltar lends a quaint note to the area between Mediterranean Europe and Northern Africa. What's more, it offers the chance to explore its myriad caves and tunnels, some of which have not yet been turned into tourist attractions and will, therefore, provide the thrill of a real adventure.

Once you emerge back into broad daylight, make sure to head for the Rock and interact with the indigenous macaques, then gaze out over Northern Africa from above. Round out your walking holiday in Gibraltar with a trip to the bay for a spot of dolphin watching.

Greenland

A reality-based joke states that Iceland is really quite green, whilst Greenland is covered in ice. But the sprawling landmass uniting Europe and America offers far more than just desolate, icy landscapes, and those who enjoy a thrill will find plenty of opportunities to hike during a trip there. Volcanoes, geysers, fjords and, of course, glaciers are all waiting to be trod upon by keen walking enthusiasts. The southern coast of the country can give the Alps a run for their money in terms of natural beauty.

Unlike what common sense may tell you, the climate in Greenland is also surprisingly mild, especially in the south, meaning you won't have to bundle up in two down jackets, gloves and scarf before taking off on your walk. It also means you will be able to enjoy the cruises to the many islands off the coast of Greenland, where you can indulge in even more trekking through unspoilt landscapes - the dream of any avid rambler!

As you can see, from the Mediterranean warmth of Gibraltar to the relative chill of Greenland, there are still plenty of offbeat, unusual destinations for the adventurous to indulge in.
